It is well known that Samuel Richardson developed extensive correspondence networks in both fact and fiction throughout his life. Much of the earliest surviving correspondence deals with his first work of fiction, the self-consciously novel and novelistic Pamela (1740). In fact, it was probably in response to the success of this novel and to the correspondence it generated that Richardson began to collect and keep copies of the letters he wrote and received. Thanks to his eagerness to collect praise and respond to criticism of Pamela, Clarissa, and Sir Charles Grandison, we now have an extensive archive of the novelist’s (though not of the printer’s) engagement with a variety of correspondents over his novels and his craft.1¹ And thanks to the Cambridge Edition of the Correspondence of Samuel Richardson, we are for the first time gaining a clear perspective on the sheer scope of his correspondence.2² The extensive revisions and additions in a forthcoming CECSR volume to sender, addressee, and transmission history of a letter about Clarissa, curiously misattributed and neglected by Richardson’s biographers, in fact indicates that much remains to be discovered about the true reach of Richardson’s correspondence networks and conversation.3³
