This note is concerned with the Viking-age stone sculpture fragment currently built into the west wall of the south porch outside of the church of St Peter and Paul in Pickering. This fragment has been classified by volume three of the Corpus of Anglo-Saxon Stone Sculpture as belonging to a hogback of ‘type e, dragonesque […] a characteristic version for eastern Yorkshire’.11 Due to the stone fragment’s positioning on the corner of the porch, the beast’s head can be viewed from three sides. From what we can see, the beast is depicted with open jaws, bearing sharp pointed teeth that are evident on both sides of its head. The presence of a curled tongue, however, is only present on one side which currently faces outwards. The beast’s eyes are represented as two concentric circles on the top of its head with smaller ears positioned behind. The nose of the creature is encased within the brickwork of the building meaning no discernible features can be identified. The form of this beast is, so far, not unusual. The noteworthy non-symmetry is not an unknown feature of hogbacks; however, it is more prevalent in the west of England.22

Pickering Hogback
