Creating a systematic, simple, and inexpensive method to measure walking route accessibility and safety is important for improving walkability in car-dominated university campuses. This study is the first to design and test a method to improve walking environments in Saudi Arabia’s university campuses. The chosen method involved two strategies that created accessibility and safety indices: a student perception questionnaire rating students’ frequently used walking routes (five-point Likert scale) and a walking route checklist rating the same walking routes through field observations (three-point Likert scale). After testing the method on four study zones in King Abdulaziz University campus, the results confirmed its simplicity and efficiency in measuring numerous walkability items. The method effectively highlights walking routes that require improvements, and administrations worldwide can adopt the method to plan and manage campus facilities.
