Jeannette A. Bastian

This essay explores the archival principle of custody focusing on its evolution beyond post-custodialism. It argues that custody, while its outer trappings and shape may change, remains firmly rooted in the bedrock upon which archival theory and practice has been built. Considering many aspects of custody including stewardship and participatory custody, it introduces the concept of the 3Cs—custody, care and control—as a working model and advocates a new model going forward.
