The School Science and Mathematics Journal is transitioning to a new editorial team. Dr. Carla Johnson is retiring as Editor of School Science and Mathematics after 10 years of service. We are grateful for her service and dedication to SSM and SSMA for the past decade. As the new co‐editorial team, we would like to take a moment to introduce ourselves and share our vision for School Science and Mathematics. As members of the School Science and Mathematics Association (SSMA), we are thrilled and appreciative for the opportunity to be co‐editors for a well‐respected journal that serves the science and mathematics community. We are both currently Associate Professors at the University of South Carolina, where the SSM editorial office will be housed. Dr. Christie Martin has a background in mathematics, and writing across content areas, while Dr. Bridget Miller's background is in science and engineering education, as well as special education. With expertise in both science and mathematics, we will continue to pursue a balance of mathematics and science publications, as well as build upon science and mathematics instruction with integrated STEM and STEAM research. We seek to maintain and enhance the high‐quality research articles published by the journal of School Science and Mathematics. We are also grateful for the support of SSMA. The SSMA mission to strive to “be an inclusive professional community bringing together researchers and teachers to promote research, scholarship, and practice to improve school science and mathematics and to advance the integration of school science and mathematics” aligns with our own beliefs and we want to be part of this work.

As we move forward, we are joined with a group of Associate Editors that provide a wealth of expertise to the journal. We hope they will serve for the duration of our 5‐year term. We have several newly recruited Associate Editors and almost half of the current Associate Editors are remaining part of the team. Dr. Megan Wuebker is the current Editorial assistant and she has also decided to continue in this role.

Transition

We are working with Dr. Johnson during the month of January to transition the editorship of the journal. Dr. Johnson prepared the January publication and the next couple of months have several manuscripts slated for publication. Our new team started the first week of January and have taken over the submissions currently in the system and assigning Associate Editors to new submissions. Dr. Shelly Harkness, former co‐editor, agreed to provide mentorship through the transition along with Past President of SSMA and newly recruited Associate Editor Dr. Suzanne Nesmith. We are incredibly grateful to Dr. Carla Johnson for her dedication to this transition, the Associate Editors that are remaining on our team, and Dr. Megan Wuebker our Editorial assistant bringing invaluable expertise.

Our vision

We seek to maintain and enhance the high‐quality research articles published by the journal of School Science and Mathematics. We want to maintain the journal's quality and standing in the research community. We want to expand the reach of the journal both nationally and internationally, increase diversity within the editorial team, collaborate with Wiley publishers to establish an impact factor, and work to improve timelines for authors. We aim to keep up to date with current trends and issues, target current needs of the field, and engage in in‐depth special issues which will meet the needs of both practitioners and researchers. We want to continue to promote the Research to Practice Companion articles to support the connections between empirical research and the classroom.

The journal is nothing without its members, authors, and reviewers. As we move forward into the new year, we aim to expand our reach both nationally and internationally by continuing to expand our membership, reviewer pool, authors, and associate editorial team. As noted, several Associate Editors are continuing, in addition we have recruited over 20 new associate editors. The decision to expand the editorial team was designed to begin addressing our goals. We sought to recruit a diverse group of Associate Editors to bring a larger scope of expertise, international presence, and create a community of researchers that are invested in promoting the organization and journal. In addition, an expanded group of Associate Editors will improve the timeline for authors. We want to ensure researchers seek out School Science and Mathematics for publication and receive timely, meaningful feedback from our team.

This past year has been unprecedented in how educators engage in teaching and learning, and how scholars conduct research in Science, Mathematics, and STEM education. There are, however, several upward trends for School Science and Mathematics that we want to highlight. International submissions (from outside North America) in 2020 remained strong at 12.5% of overall submissions—international submissions made up 12.4% of submissions in 2019 (Wiley, 2021). In addition, SSM’s article output (published articles) increased by 1.8% in 2020 compared to the previous year (Wiley, 2021). As we progress through 2021, we look to continue these upward trends, as well as work to increase SSM submissions and readership. To maintain our high quality of authors, readers, and reviewers, we seek to decrease the turnaround time from initial submission to editorial decisions and publication. We believe in the mission of the School Science and Mathematics Association, and the role of SSM members in reaching this mission. As members of SSM, you are vital to sustaining and building our network of teachers, researchers, scientists, and mathematicians. We value the insights of members and stakeholders in moving the journal forward, and continuing to advance the field of science, mathematics, and STEM education. Not only does the work published in SSM disseminate knowledge across the field, but it has the potential to influence policy at the local, state, and national level, and most importantly, the students.

We seek to be open and transparent with decisions made for the journal. We encourage feedback, suggestions, and requests that we will carefully consider. Over the next 5 years we will make decisions constantly reflecting on the mission of SSMA and the feedback from members. We look forward to being your editorial team. We hope that you will join us in our mission to extend awareness about the research and work done by SSM and SSMA.
