Though there are many models for needs assessment in the literature, reviews of published cases often find that no particular model is referenced or that best practices indicated by models are not employed. The present study examines how Certified Performance Technologists (CPTs) conduct needs assessment in practice. CPTs were surveyed to determine which models of needs assessment they reference in their work, what challenges they face in conducting needs assessments, and what strategies enable success despite those challenges.
