Evaluation is the process of systematically and systemically examining data to determine merit and worth of performance goals at the organizational, individual, and project level. While instructional design literature often references the need for formative, summative, and confirmative evaluation, research has shown that instructional designers continue to struggle with integrating evaluative techniques in practice. The purpose of this study was to conduct a qualitative investigation to explore the challenges instructional designers face while conducting evaluations. Through the use of semi‐structured interviews that utilized the critical‐incident technique, results indicated that instructional designers must contend with a variety of project constraints while attempting to evaluate design solutions throughout a project. Specific themes revealed that there is a disconnect between the evaluative techniques instructional designers would like to include and clients understanding the value that evaluation can bring to their projects. Additional recommendations are discussed, and suggestions for future research are offered.
