This is the first 2021 issue of the American Journal of Evaluation (AJE), a year in which many are looking for renewal—not simply a return to some pre-COVID normality but rather a time of deeper change for our world. In such a moment, we are fortunate to have the first AJE Section on International Developments in Evaluation, coedited by Zenda Ofir and Deborah Rugg and titled “Transforming Evaluation for Times of Global Transformation.” In these notes, I review some issues regarding the system theory perspectives underlying the articles in this section—the challenges of effecting system changes and nascent approaches for addressing those challenges—and highlight some implications for the evaluation community to consider in confronting our time’s most pressing problems.
