The United States has a complex history of gambling. Modern sport, fantasy sport, and daily fantasy sport (DFS) has complicated legal and moral views on gambling. Modern sport provided a means for widespread gambling; fantasy sport grew in the midst of legislation banning gambling; and DFS rode the coattails of a legal exemption for fantasy sport. DFS provided a bridge between fantasy sport and sports gambling, showing the untenable logic of laws accepting the former while prohibiting the latter, resulting in the trivialization and retraction of federal laws prohibiting sports gambling.
