Biology, genetic improvement and agronomy of Bunium persicum (Boiss.) Fedtsch.: A comprehensive review

Bunium persicum is an important perennial, medicinal and aromatic plant, which is widely adapted throughout the arid to semi-arid cold desert regions of medium to high altitude. It has many properties in its seeds and essential oil like culinary, antimicrobial, stimulants, anticonvulsant, restorative, diuretic and carminatives, which make it demanding for various condiment uses, pharmaceutical and aroma industry. Moreover, from past two decades, several phytochemistry and pharmacological studies have explored many bioactive compounds and their respective uses in its essential oil and making it more demanding. However, with increased demand, its protection from extinction is very important. This herb is under extinction condition due to relentless collection from wild. Usually, local people destroy the whole plant during collection for seeds. Therefore, this herb need extensive research on agrotechnology development for its sustainable utilization, cultivation and genetic improvement. Many researchers have reported its cultivation technologies, classical breeding and biotechnological approaches for genetic improvement. Studies have also been conducted on its conservation and sustainable production. Hence, in this direction, this review summarizes earlier reported studies in different headings like botanical description, distribution, plant morphology, reproductive biology, genetic improvement, agronomy and cultivation practices.
