Martin Luther King Jr. once famously said, “Life’s most persistent and urgent question is ‘What are you doing for others?’” Service takes many forms. Many of us serve in some capacity within our local community. We give our professional time in diverse ways, from serving on committees of societies to contributing to editorial boards of refereed journals. Each time we review a proposal or a manuscript, we provide an invaluable service to our community. The essential work of reviewers, who provide the backbone of the peer-review publication process, often goes unacknowledged but is never unappreciated by our team of editors. In 2015, Environmental Science& Technology Letters (ES&T Letters) established an annual Excellence in Review Award to recognize the outstanding work of our reviewers. In what has been an unprecedented year, we are particularly grateful for reviewers of articles submitted to ES&T Letters in 2020 as we aimed to continue providing rapid dissemination of timely and urgent contributions to our fields. Despite global disruptions caused by the COVID-19 pandemic, our time to first decision did not change (∼10 days) in 2020, largely due to the commitment of our dedicated reviewers. We are especially thankful to reviewers of manuscripts related to COVID-19; the rapid pace of research on this topic, its often immediate relevance to pandemic response, and high level of media interest highlight the essential role of peer review in the dissemination of scientific findings. To all reviewers of ES&T Letters submissions, please accept our warmest “Thank you” for your service to the community, particularly during this time when balancing personal and professional commitments was particularly challenging. Considering the overall workload, quality, and speed of reviews provided to ES&T Letters, we recognize the following 12 colleagues for their exemplary service with 2020 Excellence in Review Awards. Satoru Chatani National Institute for Environmental Studies, Japan Eleni Dovrou Max Planck Institute for Chemistry, Germany Jingkun Jiang Tsinghua University, China Timothy Julian EAWAG, Switzerland Tamar Kohn Ecole polytechnique fédérale de Lausanne, Switzerland Mark LeChevallier Dr. Water Consulting LLC, United States Qing Li Fudan University, China Alvine Mehinto Southern California Coastal Water Research Project, United States Mark Strynar U.S. Environmental Protection Agency, United States Hongliang Zhang Fudan University, China Shaojun Zhang Tsinghua University, China Lingyan Zhu Nankai University, China Please join us in congratulating the winners of the 2020 Excellence in Review Awards.
