Elementary Emitter at the Boundary of a Flat-Layered Structure

Abstract

A rigorous theory of emission of an elementary dipole located at the boundary of or within a flat-layered structure has been considered. A method of analytic simplification of the solution has been demonstrated for a particular case of emission of a dipole located on the free boundary of a single film. The proposed method has made it possible to reduce expressions for emitted fields to 1D integrals, which has considerably simplified analysis of the problem and reduced the computation time. As a concrete technical application of the theory, the radiation patterns have been obtained for point emitters (molecules, nanostructures) located on the free surface of a metal film in the Kretschmann configuration, possessing the induced dipole moment directed along the normal to the film surface. The effect of a surface wave on the directional properties of surface emitters has been considered.
