Clinical practice guidelines for bipolar disorder should lead to better treatment outcomes by providing evidence‐based and easy to use recommendations for clinicians regarding diagnosis and treatment. When formulating clinical guidelines, experts and taskforces face a dilemma of including evidence‐based recommendations versus consensus‐based recommendations using committee and taskforce members expertise and clinical experience to determine the clinical usefulness of specific treatment approaches, especially in areas and situations where there are knowledge gaps and current studies do not answer real world problems faced by clinicians. Remarkably, the outcomes of these competing approaches have never been compared.
