Effect of Beam Oscillation on Electron Beam Butt Welded Dual-Phase (DP600) Steel to 5754 Aluminum Alloy Joints

Butt welding of DP600 steel to 5754 aluminum alloy using electron beam welding is performed using an oscillating beam by changing its diameter at a fixed frequency. The performance of the welding joint is evaluated using electron backscatter diffraction (EBSD) texture, energy dispersive spectroscopy (EDS), and residual stresses measurement. Beam oscillation at optimum diameter produced more deformable texture fiber components than that obtained without oscillation joints. The oscillating beam demonstrated 70 pct higher elongation and almost double impact toughness than those reported by its non-oscillating counterpart. Oscillation diameter beyond an optimum value revealed a tendency to form weaker joints with deteriorated elongation and impact strength.
