Low Scattering Patch Array Antenna Based on Grooved Ground

A grooved metal ground with slits is utilized to achieve scattering cross section (SCS) reduction of a microstrip patch array antenna in this letter. By arranging the grooves and slits on the ground, 180° scattering phase differences between the elements on the ground and in the grooves are attained on the aperture, and obvious SCS reduction is obtained in a broadband. The proposed low-SCS microstrip patch array antenna is fabricated and measured in an anechoic chamber. Experimental results show that the proposed array antenna can scan up to ±60° in the E-plane and ±45° in the H-plane within the band of 10–10.6 GHz, and realizes a notable monostatic SCS reduction within the band of 7.8–13 GHz.
