Welcome to the first issue of Ornithology. While the title is new, this issue opens the 138th volume of an unbroken record of peer-reviewed, ornithological research that extends from The Auk’s first volume in 1884 (Figure 1) and, ultimately, from the 8 volumes of the Bulletin of the Nuttall Ornithological Club, started in 1876 (Allen et al. 1883). The new title is part of a long-term effort to increase the quality and international stature of the American Ornithological Society’s publications. The Auk became The Auk: Ornithological Advances in 2014 to emphasize its revised focus on basic science (Hauber 2014). However, “Ornithological Advances” was not officially registered as part of the title and was rarely included in the journal’s spoken or written name, even in bibliographies. In 2019, the American Ornithological Society embarked on a formal evaluation of its 2 journals in the context of rapid changes in scientific publishing. The committee report recommended new titles for The Auk and The Condor that clearly reflected their different focal areas. Subsequently, results from a membership survey showed that nearly two-thirds of respondents supported renaming this journal Ornithology (Beissinger et al. 2020). The title change was approved by the Society’s elected Council in June 2020 and finalized with a Fellows vote in August 2020.

(Beissinger et al.2020)。
