Potential of Wheat Milling Byproducts to Produce Fermentable Sugars via Mild Ethanol–Alkaline Pretreatment

In this work, the potential of milling byproducts for fermentable sugar production was investigated. Ethanol pretreatment coupled with a dilute sodium hydroxide (NaOH) catalyst for pretreatment of soft wheat shorts, hard wheat shorts, and hard wheat bran was conducted with NaOH pretreatment as the control. Enzymatic hydrolysis of integrated bran starch hydrolysate and pretreated biomass was performed to boost sugar concentration and yield. Compared to NaOH pretreatment, ethanol–NaOH pretreatment showed higher sugar recoveries (>85%). Mild pretreatment conditions (50% ethanol assisted with 0.08 mol/L NaOH at 150 °C for 20 min) resulted in almost neutral slurries without HMF and furfural formation, thus avoiding anticorrosion equipment investment. Integrating bran starch hydrolysate with ethanol–NaOH-pretreated biomass enhanced sugar concentration and yield. Milling byproducts that are rich in carbohydrates might have the potential for biochemical production using mild ethanol–alkaline pretreatment.
