ments believed to be under the governance of religious leaders were unified at periodic ceremonial events featuring feasting (as indicated by seven very large pit features at Clark’s Old Field) and ritual places such as the ossuaries maintained for generations at Edgehill and Wilcox Neck. The social implication of this evidence suggests the possibility of resistance to the expansion of Powhatan influence despite the Chickahominy being situated near the center of Powhatan territory. The primary focus of subsistence shifted over this period from estuarine resources to terrestrial fauna to maize. In time, the successful production of maize surpluses by the “Coarse Pounded Corn People” supported their independence from the Powhatan and supported their interactions with the Europeans when they entered the region. Werowocomoco, the Place of the Antler Wearers, was the political center of the Powhatan. Known to many as the location of Captain John Smith’s interaction with Powhatan (the man) and Pocahontas, this site reflects an approximately 350-year long history of occupation. A series of trenches constructed beginning around AD 1200 appear to have been used to define ritual space probably used for gatherings such as the Huskanaw, a rite of passage directed by antler-wearing priests. Native development of the site culminated ca. 1560 with the construction of a 22 × 6 meter structure believed to be Powhatan’s “palace.” This was a persistent place for both ritual practices and governance. The Powhatan’s rise to regional power and influence was rooted in the complexities of a long, persistent history of Algonquian occupations. This is the first volume of a planned series concerned with the archaeology of society and ecology on the island and coastal environments with a goal of supporting the development of a more nuanced understanding of such environments and people’s connection to them. While some readers may be disappointed that the discussions are not more deeply ecologically based, Gallivan wants to depart from a more conventional cultural ecology approach. To the extent the book is ecological and supports the goals of this series of which it is a part, it adheres very generally to the process-oriented perspective seen in historical ecology. The obvious strength of Powhatan Landscape is the attempt to integrate Native perspectives to arrive at a richer narrative than more conventional approaches have permitted. He shifts the archaeology of the Chesapeake away from colonial accounts to one constructed primarily from a Native sense of place. Gallivan collaborated with contemporary Chickahominy, Pamunkey, Mattaponi, Rappahannock, and Nansemond communities not only to generate research questions but also to frame the inquiry and enrich interpretations. Gallivan thus provides a model of how such collaborations can be conducted and their various benefits. Accordingly, this book will be of interest not only to those concerned with the Chesapeake region’s prehistoric and European-contact pasts, but also those seeking more meaningful engagement with descendent Native communities anywhere.
