Greetings! Thus far in 2019, the journal has commemorated the 50 anniversary of The Other 23 Hours with special commentaries about the sentinel book (see issue 1) and released a special issue on refugees and unaccompanied minors in residential care (issue 2). Although this current issue is not designated as a special issue, the papers included present new findings and conclusions related to two substantive challenges that any residential program has likely faced: cross-system collaboration and providing effective treatment to youth with internalizing disorders. As the complexity of the youth and families served by therapeutic residential care programs continues to increase, the need for professionals to work adeptly across professions, services and systems is also increased. Several papers in this issue focus on the challenges of collaborating and coordinating across child-serving systems. McDaniel and Carter describe the challenges with academic re-entry for youth who have been in residential facilities. Van den Steene, van West, and Glazemakers describe a collaborative effort between a residential program and a psychiatric facility in Belgium. Both of these papers acknowledge structural barriers that can make collaboration difficulty, but that coordinated efforts can improve the quality of services provided to youth and families. Also in this issue, there is some attention directed towards internalizing disorders. Unlike externalizing issues that are hard to ignore, internalizing symptoms can be easy to miss and therefore go untreated. Molinari and colleagues looked at the relationships between anxiety, depression, and quality of life among a sample of youth receiving cognitive-behavioral therapy in residential programs. They found that responding to treatment was associated with increased quality of life, underscoring the importance of delivering evidence-based interventions for youth in care. Kumm, Maggin, Brown, and Talbott conducted a meta-analysis of mental health interventions for youth with internalizing disorders in juvenile justice facilities. They note the challenges of delivering active treatment for youth in short-term programs and the lack of integration of these interventions with the lifespace of a residential program. Attentive readers will have noticed that the journal is now releasing papers online first, prior to their assignment to an issue. If you are interested in being among the first to know when a new paper is released, I encourage you to sign up for new content alerts on the journal’s website at tandfonline.com. You will then receive an email alert as new papers are posted to the website. As always, thanks for your interest and continued efforts to promote positive outcomes for youth in therapeutic residential care settings! Sincerely,
