Similarly to Coetzee’s previous ‘post-South African’ novels, The Schooldays of Jesus minimises plot for Socratic dialogue, Platonic ideas and entanglements of thought. Rather than lamenting a thinning of realist convention, however, I argue that one can fruitfully approach Schooldays within a genre – the novel of ideas – that has a long tradition at the intersection of philosophy and literature.
