Influence of electrode arrangement on recycling metal-coated plastic (DVD-R) using pulsed electric discharge

A study has been made to find an effective method for recycling DVD-R using a pulsed electric discharge. Pretreatment to expose a metal layer is required for DVD-R because the metal layer is sandwiched by two polycarbonate plates, different from other optical discs such as CD-R/ROM. In this study, a DVD-R was manually separated into two pieces from the boundary between the metal and recording layers. Moreover, the electrode arrangement should be modified to effectively generate a discharge because the pretreated disc has an exposed metal surface. For this purpose, an out-sided and center electrode (OCE) arrangement with an air gap between the electrodes and metal layer was employed. The progress of metal removal was measured for the different air gap length. The influence of the air gap was discussed based on the observation of the voltage/current waveforms and the state of discharge and metal removal. As a result, it was revealed that 100% removal could not be achieved in the case of the electrode arrangement without an air gap. On the other hand, it was revealed that the processing rate decreased as increased of the air gap between the metal layer and the electrode. An air gap of about 3 mm was effective for DVD-R recycling.
