Abstract

In this paper, we propose a general approach based on the verbal decision analysis (VDA) to ordinal, nominal–ordinal, and nominal multiattribute classification problems that is implemented in the STEPCLASS method. It includes the following techniques: application domain structuring with the determination of a classification problem type, flexible strategy of dialogue with the expert for acquiring a complete and consistent set of his/her classification rules with the possibility of modifying the application domain structure, and decomposition of large-size classification problems with the subsequent aggregation of classification rules over the set of all attributes.
