About the Special Report

This special report grows out of a project conducted by The Hastings Center and funded by the John S. and James L. Knight Foundation. Preliminary versions of many of the essays in the report were presented and discussed at a workshop held at Hastings in November 2018. In addition, presentations were given at the workshop by Archon Fung, of Harvard University's John F. Kennedy School of Government; Benjamin Hurlbut, of Arizona State University; Mark Schlesinger, of Yale University; and Carmen Sirianni, of Brandeis University, and those presentations influenced and informed the report.

Isabel Bolo and Benjamin Wills provided invaluable research assistance throughout the project. The editors also thank eight anonymous reviewers for critical suggestions and comments on these essays.
