Caring for the People of the Clouds: Aging and Dementia in Oaxaca beautifully renders the caregiving practices of Zapotec-speaking families living with a relative afflicted with Alzheimer’s disease, dementia or stroke. Set in Teotitlán del Valle, a world-renowned textile-weaving community twenty miles from Oaxaca City, Yahalom’s field site selection was astute: Teotitlán is at once strongly indigenous yet closely linked to the globalized world. One manifestation of this seeming incongruity is that Teotitecos regard Alzheimer’s and other forms of age-related cognitive decline as heretofore unknown illnesses caused by the demands of the global economy. Global integration has, moreover, upended traditional lifestyles, including patterns of family care.
