Abstract

Koege Nord Station is Greater Copenhagen's new landmark of international dimensions: A futuristic 225 meters long covered pedestrian bridge and station that provides a convenient connection above Denmark's busiest traffic corridor. The corridor consists of an eight-lane highway, double S-train tracks and four highspeed train tracks. The new transportation hub introduces a spectacular pedestrian bridge, a train station and parking facilities for the public. 90,000 passengers per day are estimated to pass under the bridge—8,000 of them are expected to use the station. The station's design caters for the good travel experience, where people using the pedestrian bridge can enjoy an open view to the north while relaxing on the wooden construction to the south. The first part of this paper will shortly describe the background and vision for the international design competition assignment. The second part will go into details about the conceptual and aesthetic design process that led to the winning proposal. The third part will describe some interesting aspects of the detailed design of the pedestrian bridge and transportation hub, which has already gained national and international recognition with multiple award nominations and wins.
