An opportunity exists to advance our understanding of the microcirculation and capabilities to therapeutically manipulate it by connecting clinicians with basic science researchers. This special topic issue emphasizes the impacts of the microcirculation on different aspects of clinical medicine and showcases how microvascular research might bridge knowledge gaps to improve patient outcomes. Co‐authored by clinicians and basic science researchers, our collection of review articles focuses on the roles of microvascular function and dysfunction in the prognosis, diagnosis, and therapeutic management of various diseases and organ systems in humans. Through clinically‐motivated research areas including stem cell therapy, CNS tumors, stroke, chronic kidney disease, coronary dysfunction, lymphatic vessels, critical illness, and human microvascular imaging, this collection of articles showcases the tremendous value that is generated and the benefits to patients when clinicians and basic scientists investigate microvascular physiology and pathologies using collaborative approaches and innovative technologies.
