Lyon is shocking. Such firsthand accounts provide an invaluable look at the theatre and the life of a touring actor in nineteenth-century America. In later chapters, the author traces Booth’s 1880–81 season acting with Irving and Terry in London, the acrimonious separation from and eventual death of Mary McVicker, and Booth’s successful tour of Germany and Austria. Watermeier next moves to summaries of Booth’s tours later in the 1880s, including the Joint-Star Tours with Barrett and later Modjeska. Given the sheer volume of Booth’s work, here Watermeier does an admirable job of addressing the sometimes dizzying array of cities, theatres, plays, roles, and receipts. He does so, again, by balancing data with context, mostly from newspaper accounts and correspondence. Chapter 11, “The Curtain Descends, 1890–1893” finds Booth retiring from the stage before succumbing to his own health problems. The author concludes with a description of Booth’s burial and an excellent summation of the effect Booth’s work had on the theatre of the day. Daniel J. Watermeier’s American Tragedian: The Life of Edwin Booth is the most authoritative account of Booth’s career we are likely to see for some time. It is an achievement and one that should be a part of the library of any historian interested in Booth specifically or nineteenth-century American theatre in general.
