Empathy and Other Minds in Ulysses

Abstract:This essay locates Ulysses in a shift in the history of philosophy: from before the 1920s, when feeling another person’s feelings was thought possible, to after the 1930s, when the privacy of other minds was widely accepted. By remembering that “empathy” used to mean not compassion but actual access to the emotions of another, and by resituating Ulysses in this intellectual history, I reinterpret one of the central puzzles of the novel: what happens when Bloom and Stephen meet? I focus on the “Eumaeus” episode and argue that there is a moment between them that can be understood to be empathy in the older, stranger sense, when Stephen feels Bloom’s feelings. I offer this reading as an alternative interpretation of their connection that does not rely on Homeric parallels, and as a case study for how literature can chart the tectonic movements of paradigm shifts.
