In the title essay of Slouching Towards Bethlehem, she explicitly invokes William Butler Yeats's vision of social and cultural disintegration after World War I when she blames the hippies for loosing mere anarchy upon the country. She takes a cue from modernist techniques by fracturing the essay's structure to reflect the cultural fragmentation around her."
