Abstract:This article intervenes in the schism between animal studies and scholarship on race, fields reliant upon analogies between racial and species violence. While animal studies deploys slavery as an analogy for animal rights, scholarship on slavery often regards the animal as an analogy for dehumanization. Moving beyond analogy, this article uses the contemporary narrative of slavery as an entrance into entangled thinking about race and species. Reading Charles Johnson’s Oxherding Tale (1982) and Toni Morrison’s Beloved (1987), I argue that the contemporary narrative of slavery permits a relation between race and species that returns to the material site of the linkage between these categories.
