Vol. 35, No. 2, 2018 The most appropriate audience for Hartley’s study is a wide range of students and general readers who enjoy Dickens’s fiction and wish to discover for themselves some of the basics of literary study. Appendices include a biographical “Timeline,” “Further Reading” with “General” and chapter by chapter selections (these could be augmented), and an index. The eight well-chosen illustrations are reproduced in a gray tone, whose sharpness in some instances leaves room for improvement.
