Our red Radio Flyer wagon piled high with a water cooler, tote bags full of food, and a cardboard box brimming with books, my young family hosted the poet Naomi Shihab Nye for a picnic at the University of South Florida before I interviewed her in April of 2015. Our vegetarian meal featured fare from a local Turkish restaurant, roasted Brussels sprouts, pita, and hummus. We brought hummus because I had read somewhere that Shihab Nye—whose father was a refugee from Palestine to the United States and who herself lived in both San Antonio, Texas, and Jerusalem as a child—hoped a Westerner would serve her hummus someday. We also ate steamed dumplings and Filipino lumpia cooked by my spouse, Christine, and a Crock-Pot of bean soup sent along by my dear friend Anna. We ate, talked, laughed, took photos, and exchanged small gifts. We gave Shihab Nye coffee beans. She gave me a broadside, printed on handmade paper, of her poem “The Traveling Onion” (1986). She did not know I had been teaching that very poem for years. When I spread dozens of her books out on the table to refer to during our interview, she responded by generously telling me we would do the same with my books someday. Perhaps best of all, she chatted with our daughters. We have a photo of our then-six-year-old forking a dumpling into her mouth while Shihab Nye, a gentle, bemused smile on her face, tells her something. She might have been a relative rather than a famous poet. I share this anecdote as preface to our interview because everything about the picnic embodies some aspect of Shihab Nye’s writing—the small, cozy gathering; the multi-ethnic, multinational histories of the picnickers; the sharing of good, real, healthy, handmade food; the presence of children; the pile of books; the small tangible and intangible gestures of kindness. As broadly and ecumenically as possible, our meal was a kind of communion, just like Shihab Nye’s writing. In an illustrious career that has spanned over forty years, Shihab Nye has published so many books and won so many awards that even tracking them all down proves difficult. She shows no signs of slowing. A former chancellor of the Academy of American Poets, she has won Pushcart Prizes; Guggenheim, Lannan, and Witter Bynner fellowships; and many other awards and accolades.
