This essay explores Orhan Pamuk’s The Museum of Innocence, showing how the void the main character is terrified to face appears full-blown in the museum, where it signifies lack/desire as well as Lacanian love. Through its main character, whose ailments are eventually cured paradoxically through his shame, the novel navigates between fetishistic sexist rigidity and an equally fetishistic capitalist satiety. Pamuk’s Museum of Innocence is grounded in Turkish history and pays tribute to that rich history as it both spirals around and opens up a space that serves as the basis of erotic encounter. This reading brings out a sense of melancholic attachment to Istanbul.
