ously known only as numbers in statistical analysis, this study will lead to even more research into the Revolution and early Republic (5, 6). Despite any deficiencies, which are slight, Van Buskirk provides a history that is refreshingly respectful of historical actors. This includes white Americans who fought alongside, praised, and attested to the brave characters of their black compatriots for many decades after the war. As a result, Standing in Their Own Light successfully pieces together the lives, accomplishments, and aspirations of men and women who expected or at least hoped that the American Revolution would significantly improve their lives. Van Buskirk guides us through a crucial period in the nation’s history that substantiates her argument that despite the pitfalls and the ebb of African Americans’ freedoms and rights, the Revolution moved those who suffered racism and slavery to actively participate in a fight to transform their world. Instead of joining the British, black Patriots joined the Revolution. Though they did so at great peril, they not only accepted an invitation from those in power but also gained “decision making power” of their own (19, 26).
