Donnalyn Pompper’s book ‘Corporate social responsibility, sustainability and public relations: Negotiating multiple complex challenges’ offers provocative thoughts on the role of public relations professionals within organizations. The book ties this role in the development of corporate social responsibility (CSR) and sustainability and argues that public relations professionals have a crucial role in making organizations more responsible and sustainable. The book is illustrated with excerpts from 100 interviews with public relations professionals, CSR/sustainability experts, and consultants from different geographical regions. With these different voices, Pompper brings together a rather multi-faceted view to CSR and sustainability. The book explores historical, theoretical, and cultural interpretations of CSR and sustainability; implications for organizational structure, practices, and governance; as well as topical themes, such as partnering, social media, measuring impact, and reporting CSR and sustainability. As such, the author seeks to engage with CSR and sustainability scholars and practitioners widely and overall does a respectable job in covering the massive thematic area of CSR and sustainability. The value of Pompper’s book is especially in how it discusses what CSR and sustainability ‘do’ to public relations: Do they make public relations lose credibility? Do they get public relations blamed for greenwashing and putting up smokescreens? Or do they turn public relations professionals into activists within organizations? The book strongly advocates for the activist role, following the work of Holtzhausen (2012) and Holtzhausen and Voto (2002). The argument for the activist role is framed in public relations’ central position in relationship building and keeping up with external changes. With this framing, the book does not strongly take a stance on what CSR is or is not – it can be many different things, depending on the organization’s working environment, stakeholders, and industry context (cf. Matten and Moon, 2008). What the author does suggest strongly, however, is that it is the job of the public relations professional to find out what constitutes meaningful CSR and sustainability in a given context. The central message put forward in the book is that public relations professionals need to navigate CSR and sustainability as ‘insider-activists’ even when the outcomes are inconsistent with organizational interests.
