Abstract

The wear behaviors of 4145H drilling tool steel in water-based slurries were investigated under the conditions of various concentrations of SiO2, Al2O3, and SiC sands using a modified ASTM B611 rubber ring wet grinding test system. Under identical conditions, the measured wear loss was positively correlated with the sliding distance, abrasive hardness, and sand concentration. However, the wear rate fluctuated within a very small range during the whole grinding process when the same abrasive with a certain mass fraction was used. Examination of the wear surface revealed that the 4145H steel specimens underwent plastic deformation but the main wear mechanism of the specimens was microcutting.
