Future of 300 GHz band wireless communications and their enabler, CMOS transceiver technologies

The 300GHz band, which has a continuous 44GHz frequency band from 252 to 296GHz, was identified for wireless applications in WRC-19. The 300GHz band has the potential to achieve significantly higher transmission rates than conventional wireless communications. In addition, atmospheric attenuation is relatively low. Therefore, research on the 300GHz band has been attracting a lot of attention. Although compound semiconductors with excellent high-frequency performance have been used for the realization of ultrahigh-frequency transceivers in the 300GHz band, CMOS integrated circuits are advantageous for practical applications in the 300GHz band. We have realized a 300GHz single chip transceiver using CMOS integrated circuits by using parallel connections for multipliers and mixers. This paper presents an overview of the 300GHz band CMOS transceiver. In addition, we discuss the challenges of using 300GHz ultrafast communication for long-distance transmission.
