expression is undoubtedly a useful one, there may be other ways to help shape it. Perhaps the most effective is honesty in teaching history about ourselves, not as nations but as humanity. The process of education is long and complex, the results not always obvious. It demands that everybody recognize that official policies have justified one people’s persecution or the extirpation of another. The justifications range from clan to race to religion and beyond. Lewy’s intractable question demands our attention precisely because the answer goes beyond freedom of expression, fear of closing off academic debate, or the choice of language to describe brutality. We must reach beyond the language of 1944 with the birth of the “international crime” of “genocide” to recognize the larger record of humanity. Unless every nation, every school system, every population will acknowledge our weaknesses; unless we as professionals guide and instruct in the spirit of honesty about our collective past; then denial will live among us. Only a well-informed-majority can silence a movement to deny the reality of others’ suffering.
