arly perceptions have been at risk of becoming fossilized. His rigorous institutionaland media-oriented research reveals important but lesser-known aspects of these undertakings. While Shenker makes incisive observations about testimonial institutions, the terms he chooses for discussing witnesses do not fully serve his material. Specifically, his research could have led to more forceful insights about what “good” emotions mean in contemporary North American discourse, and how witnesses internalize expectations of affect, long before appearing on screen. Despite this missed opportunity, his work contributes substantially to testimony studies, and, one hopes, will spark new debates.
