Behind this complicated title is a volume of proceedings which contains 10 articles on pre-Mongol Central Asia, with a special emphasis on the tenth and twelfth centuries. Such a regional focus is to be hailed. This vast region, stretching from the central deserts of the Iranian Plateau (the Kevirs) to the steppes of Inner Asia, could as well be called ‘Eastern Iran’ or ‘Greater Khurasan’. It was one of the cradles of classical Islam, maybe the most important. It owes significant cultural and intellectual developments to this region, but also its political momentum under the Abbasids and, later on, its transformation through interaction with the Turkish people. It is also the region, with Mesopotamia, for which the Mongol conquest represents the clearest cut. As such the volume could have been entitled Turkestan Down to the Mongol Invasion Revisited since most of the subjects somehow connect with the truly seminal work written by Vladimir Bartol’d in 1899. But it is another volume of proceedings that the editors had in mind: the important Islamic Civilization 950–1150 edited by Donald Richards (see p. xxi).1 The most important contributions are, I believe, those of Robert Hillenbrand and Jürgen Paul (they are incidentally the longest by far). With ‘Content Versus Context in Samanid Epigraphic Pottery’, Hillenbrand studies the famous Samanid wares that, although appreciated for their
