The Valley of the Kings is one of the most famous and to a certain extent also one of the most prestigious archaeological sites in Egypt with several almost intact tombs discovered over the last 120 years. In contrast to the importance of the place, there are surprisingly few final excavation reports. Excavation results have most often been presented in short preliminary reports, leaving many questions open for an evaluation of what was found. The book under review helps to fill this gap. It is a full assessment of the objects from the burial of the Eighteenth Dynasty official Maiherperi discovered in 1899 by Victor Loret who was never able to present his excavation records in a published form. For a long time, the main source for reconstructing the arrangement of objects in the burial chamber were short notes by Georg Schweinfurth who was present when the tomb was discovered. The field notes by Loret himself were only published in 2004,1 at which point it finally became possible to evaluate not only the individual objects, but the tomb group and its spatial arrangement as a whole. Several objects have been misplaced since the discovery, and others are in a much worse condition than when first found, highlighting again the urgency of good recording and publication of such assemblages. The volume presents all objects from the tomb that were accessible for documentation at the time of this research.2 Most of them are now on display in the Egyptian Museum at Cairo, previously published in a Catalogue Général volume.3 The new book goes into much greater detail, including a full description of all objects, colour images for most, and about 30 drawings. Hieroglyphic and hieratic texts on the objects are presented in typeset hieroglyphs, transliteration and translation. In particular, the Maiherperi copy of the Book of the Dead receives a full new translation; in this

书评:“Der Löwe auf dem Schlachtfeld”。Das Grab KV 36 和 die Bestattung des Maiherperi im Tal der Könige
