The History of the Textbook: The State of the Discipline

Abstract:This overview presents a critical examination of the existing body of scholarship on textbooks and their production and reception. Textbooks are complex pedagogical artifacts imbued with varied literary style and educational substance. I argue that the methods of book history have the potential to reinvigorate textbook scholarship, and that there is still considerable room for growth in the study of the history of the textbook.
