In Spanish, the second-person singular may convey two meanings: the first one indexes a singular interlocutor or addressee (deictic) and the other one is non-deictic, meaning that both speaker and listener(s) become referents of the second person. Speakers move from they personal sphere and what they are saying is presented as being of general interest, involving not only the speakers, but also the audience, therefore, it tends towards objectivity. Such usage has been labelled as objectivizing. This meaning is a matter of gradualness; it may be more personal or closer to the speaker (objectivizing) or it may be presented as a fact universally shared (objectivizing +). The absence of any temporal marker gives rise to the just objectivizing meaning, while their presence will imply a step forward and mark the reference as objectivizing +. Both variants are unevenly distributed across diverse kind of texts and participants. The objectivizing variant is used to present more personal or subjective content and it is used in all kinds of texts and by all kinds of participants. The objectivizing + variant serves to promote a kind of universal shared state of things, very useful in certain communicative areas like advertising and social media.
