Abstract

Poly(vinyl alcohol)-poly[2-(4-acetylphenoxy)-2-oxoethyl-2-methylacrylate]/poly(vinyl alcohol)-cellulose composite membranes were generated, characterized and used to isolate Fe (III) and Cu (II) ions from aqueous media. The effects of pH and ion concentration on percent retention and flux were observed in the ultrafiltration of the heavy metals with a stirred ultrafiltration cell at a stirring speed of 300 rpm and a pressure of 60 psi. The maximum overall % retention of the Fe (III) ions by the membranes from the solution was observed to be 89.05% as a result of the tests. In these experiments the pH and Fe (III) concentrations were selected as 6 and 0.1 × 10−4 M respectively. The maximum overall % retention of the Cu (II) ions from the solution was observed to be 71.35% at a pH of 5 and concentration of 0.1 × 10−4 M for Cu (II) solutions.
