Abstract:The influence of Pindar on Latin poets has received relatively little attention, and this article adds to our understanding of the forms such influence takes by analyzing the third Pythian as a model for Ovid's narrative of the myth of Coronis and her fatal love affair with Apollo (Met. 2.542–632). A comparative analysis of the two narratives shows that Ovid responded to the Pindaric version at the levels of language, structure, and characterization, most notably that of Apollo. Furthermore, the epinician influence highlights the themes of victory, defeat, and envy that pervade and help unify the poem's first two books.

Ovidian Re-Formations
