Abstract

Monolithic, optically transparent silica was synthesized for the first time by a green-chemistry method using tannin as a template. Silver nanoparticles were produced in silica mesopores by the reduction by the remaining tannin. After the removal of tannin, silica was coated with titania, which was transformed into anatase by annealing at 500°C. The obtained nanocomposite demonstrated high photocatalytic activity, which was enhanced by the combination of titania and nanosized silver.
