A Drama of the Southwest: The Critical Edition of a Forgotten Play by Jean Toomer
Western American Literature Pub Date : 2017-01-01 , DOI: 10.1353/wal.2017.0009
Bill D. Toth

478 Fee is uncompromising in her insistence that “identities and their related claims to land and power are formed out of and with social discourse” (89). Th is cuts both ways, so that if the symbol of the Crown “anchors the fi ction that regulates justice, property and governance” in Canada, it is also the case that Indigenous sovereignty “requires a kind of collective performance” (139). What unifi es the book’s readings is the repeated demonstration that an orientation to identities and traditions as learned, continuously adapted, and iteratively sustained can ground the respectful relationships necessary to a “multijuridical” Canada.
