Recognizing the power of women in the public sphere, she walks the delicate line of celebrating the work of a handful of women without essentializing it. As Durham notes in her final chapter, the work of these mid-career playwrights is anything but over, and the same could certainly be said for her own project. Durham’s book is a beginning. It is a call to value the unheard voices of the stage, an invitation to look deeper into the threads that connect them, and a challenge to continue to seek out more.
