Just as Ellul’s analysis of technique has too long been misrepresented as a Luddite rejection of all technology, so his political vision of nonpower and subversive personalism has too often been seen as an appeal for social and political inaction or disengagement. Looking askance at political presence and authority is one thing. Disengaging altogether is another. Ellul’s prophetic voice is much more the former than the latter, ringing out as a kind of ‘not so fast’ warning against accepting the stream of images drowning the social consciousness in false mythologies and reinforcing oftenoppressive political structures. The tensions of subversive witness and active presence define Christian existence in the world. As an exploration of this tension (and many other topics of great importance), this volume does much to bring Ellul’s thought forward into contemporary conversations in need of his perspective and prophetic insights. If there is a weakness of the volume, it lies in the tendency of some chapters to summarize Ellul’s thought, rather than engaging and leveraging his ideas to their full extent. While not a fatal flaw, some unevenness in critical analysis exists from section to section. In the end, resisting political illusions and living in God’s reality demands fully embracing Christian moral witness while also resisting the idolatrous mythologies counterproductive to living for the glory of God and the good of all created order.
