The Los Angeles-based Haas Brothers have arguably at least partly made a career of either casually or playfully minimizing the traditional dichotomy between art and design, rather than/if not as a way of directly questioning it. Designers cum artists by way of sculptural practice, the twins—Simon and Nikolai—started out nine years ago as the former, commissioned by decidedly celebrity clients, though they have since ambled the functionality divide, emerging much as the latter. Along the way, the brothers have also managed to willfully explore what have become consistent themes in their work, such as sexuality, the absurd and/or possibly carnivalesque, cartoon aestheticism as much as that of folk art, biomorphism, and perhaps ultimately the employment of traditional alongside innovative multimedia craft-ways transversely paralleling that of the aforementioned dynamic between art and design. Madonna, the siblings’ first solo gallery exhibition at Marianne Boesky in New York City, consists exclusively of works dated this year, built collaboratively with workshops in California, South Africa, and Portugal, and mostly composed of beadwork over the mixed fiber stuffing of wire, waxed paracord, wood, and steel. Cumulatively, it showcases where the Haas Brothers’ thematic and aesthetic, and material concerns are at the moment.
